Visas
Visitors must hold a national passport or acceptable travel document valid for the intended stay, show evidence of sufficient funds, and hold a return or onward ticket. Nationals of certain countries also need an entry visa, normally issued on application by a Jamaican consular office.
The decision on admission and length of stay rests with the Immigration Officer at the port of entry in Jamaica, whether or not a visa is required.
General conditions for admission
A person wishing to visit Jamaica should hold a valid visa unless exempted under the prescribed regulations, and must be able to support themselves and any accompanying dependents for the duration of the stay. Admission may be refused to a person of unsound mind, a person named in a health officer's certificate advising against landing, a person sentenced abroad for an extraditable crime under the Extradition Acts 1870 and 1906, a person subject to a deportation order under the Aliens Law, Chapter 9, or a person subject to a landing prohibition order from the Minister of National Security.
North American tourists
United States citizens require a valid passport for entry into Jamaica, since the document is required by the US for re-entry. US permanent residents visiting as tourists for up to six months, holding return or round-trip tickets showing a journey that began in the USA, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands, do not require a passport for entry to Jamaica but do need one to re-enter the USA under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Canadian citizens need a return ticket to Canada plus a valid passport, a Canadian citizenship card with photograph, or a birth certificate with identity documents. Canadian permanent residents need a return ticket, a valid passport and a Permanent Resident Card.
Cruise passengers
Cruise passengers of any nationality who intend to remain on the island only while their vessel is in port, and to depart on the same vessel, are not required to hold passports.
Business travellers
Foreign and Commonwealth nationals entering for short-term business such as consultations, meetings, inspections, repairs or technical advice are admitted as visitors under the entry requirements for their country. Each visit should not exceed 30 days, and the cumulative total within a calendar year should not exceed 180 days. Travellers need a valid passport, a return or round-trip ticket, and a visa if applicable.
Work permit
Foreign and Commonwealth nationals who wish to take up employment of any kind must obtain a work permit or work permit exemption before entering the country. Required documents are a valid passport, a return or round-trip ticket, a work permit issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, and a visa if applicable.
Students
Students require a valid passport, a visa where required, a return ticket valid for one year, a letter of acceptance from the school or institution they will attend, and adequate funds to cover expenses for one year in the first instance.
Visas to take up residency
Applicants granted temporary or permanent residence in Jamaica must show evidence of that approval before a single-entry visa is issued.
Foreign seamen
Seamen embarking from or landing in Jamaica need valid passports or other acceptable travel documents establishing nationality and identity. A Seaman's Discharge Book is acceptable, except for a stateless seaman, who should hold a travel document from the country issuing the book. Crew members of a ship visiting Jamaica do not need visas to land while the ship remains in port, but must depart with the ship. Seamen travelling to join a ship in Jamaica, or passing through to join a ship abroad, require transit visas unless they are nationals of visa-exempt countries. Applications to work on dredgers should be referred to the Ministry of National Security, and such persons need work permits from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
